So I finally sent off my UCAS application before the Christmas holidays began. Although I do not yet know whether i will decide to go to university, I still applied for 5 courses in case I make that decision in the summer. I wanted to take French and Politics, however this proved somewhat difficult since the universities in my area are limited, and I want to live at home for the duration of my study.

In the end I found one university situated 20 miles away which did do the course I wanted, however it is unlikely that I will get in considering that I need very high grades and there are only 5 places for that course. My other four options consisted of French and a minor language such as Russian and Japanese. Hopefully I will get at least one placement before I have to make my decision...

I'm sorry, I just have to laugh at that.

You are just narrowing down your options. From that, it seems to me that you are making it ever harder to get yourself to where you want to be in say 15 or 20 years, all for the benefit of having luxuries and comfort today.

My brother went to another country so as to be at the best possible university. My friends also hoping to go to university, for them proximity to home does not really feature into their decisions, it is more about the quality of the courses that are attracting them to their universities of choice.

I'm not interested in wasting the governments time, money and educational facilities to get myself a good career. It's my career and my life. If I want to stay with my family who I love and care for then it's my choice. If I chose to go away, I know that I would not work because I'd be too distracted. Not everyone's first priority is to get rich quick. Thank you for your input, but I don't find it at all relevant to my decision, or my blog.

Oooo, good luck with getting a placement! 20 miles doesnt sound that bad actually, especially if it has the course you want. Heres to hoping you get that one!

Did you decide what minor language you would do if you got one of the others?

I've chosen Russian at one, and Japanese at the other. I'm going to continue learning the other one in my spare time hopefully though. C:

Any reason for wanting to learn Russian? I assume you would be learning to write it as well as speak it, assuming you learn it of course.

Mainly because then I'd be able to speak to my aunt and cousin and understand them. :)

She's taught me basic things, but not enough to say that I know the language.

Also if I were to learn Russian, I would be able to to grasp Greek more easily since Russian came from Greek.

I guess that Russian and Japanese are just more interesting to me, because they are more unique, whereas European languages are quite similar in makeup.

Russian and Japanese certainly are unique compared to the European languages XD

Well, I hope you get to learn one of them! It sounds like it would be fun.

Interesting choices. There are one or two languages I'd love to speak, to be able to chat to some of my friends. Spanish and Swedish are on the top of my list.
